Founded in 1985, Vital Engineering, a program of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), has provided highly skilled consultation, training, and personnel to more than 150 clinical centers and 500 health care providers. Today, Vital Engineering is a successful program with a total of more than 275 VADs and heart device implants supported. A pioneer in its field, Vital Engineering first initiated Novacor VAD use in 1988, and began Thoratec VAD use in 1990.
